A Student Review of University of Notre Dame

A Student Review of University of Notre Dame The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Kenny is a St. Louis tutor specializing in Algebra tutoring, Calculus tutoring, History tutoring, and a number of other areas. He is currently a junior at University of Notre Dame majoring in Economics and Math. See what he had to share about University of Notre Dame: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Kenny: The University of Notre Dame campus is very beautiful. It is about an hour east of Chicago, and it is quite safe. The schools campus police swiftly handle any criminal incidents. Because the alumni and administration want to maintain a safe and friendly environment, the campus is only accessible via one main road. Buses, however, are available to take students to and from Midway and OHare Airports in Chicago. There is also an Amtrak station close by, as well as a regional airport approximately 10 minutes from campus. Many students own bikes, and they use them during the fall and spring months to more quickly access areas of campus that are far from their dorms. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Kenny:Most professors hold office hours at last three times per week, and they are often available even when they do not have posted office hours. The same is true of teaching assistants. The professors are very personable, and they are quick to respond to any difficulties you may have. The academic advisers are intelligent, engaged, and quick to respond to student needs. The First Year of Studies advisers are particularly helpful in leading each freshman to the best course of study for them. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Kenny:University of Notre Dame dorm life is very active. Students are interested in their hallmates, and you are likely to make many friends wherever you live. In other words, because the school has no fraternities, dorm communities often become tight-knit families. Rectors (headmasters) and resident assistants are, without fail, great leaders who make a vigorous effort to be involved (but not overly so) with the on-campus life of each dorm resident. The University of Notre Dame has several dining options, and its dining halls are among the best in the nation. One of them even looks like Hogwarts. The most incredible aspect of the University of Notre Dame, however, is the schools unique ability to unite strong athletics and academics with an inspired Catholic faith. No other school can offer this combination the way that University of Notre Dame does. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Kenny:The Mendoza College of Business has been ranked #1 for undergraduate study in the country. However, all schools (and all departments within the schools) are well represented and supported by University of Notre Dame administrators, alumni, and faculty. I studied Economics and Mathematics because I have always had a very analytical mind, and I love both Abstract and Applied Math. My professors and classmates inspired me to pursue a graduate degree in Economics. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Kenny:Due to its reputation as a strong Catholic institution, Greek life is literally nonexistent at University of Notre Dame. Nonetheless, and perhaps due to this unique attribute, meeting other freshmen and upperclassmen who share similar interests, goals, and values is very easy (and enjoyable). I can confidently recall having made 10 close friends within my first two weeks of college. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Kenny:The Career Center, Student Activities Office, and University Health Services are all very helpful. The University of Notre Dame hosts over 300 student-led organizations, and the Mental Health Center is a great resource for students who find themselves struggling to adjust to college life. The Career Center ensures that students have the opportunity to accept internships and jobs from such companies as Pfizer, JPMorgan, John Deere, and the American Enterprise Institute. However, the Career Center also ensures that students who wish to pursue advanced degrees have all the necessary resources to do so. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Kenny:The University of Notre Dames study areas are many and varied. Students can choose to study in one of their dorms lounges, the bookstore, the LaFortune Student Center, the Hesburgh Library (which boasts 3.39 million volumes and 14 stories), or one of the several other libraries around campus. Each of these study spaces offers something different some are busy, some are very quiet, some are best for group projects, and others are best for an intense final review before that Econometrics exam you almost forgot to study for. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Kenny:The campus of the University of Notre Dame offers everything that many students desire. As a result, some students may never feel a need to leave. However, when they do want to relieve stress, South Bend has several friendly bars, a fun nightclub, a minor league baseball team, and many opportunities for service. While some students spend their evenings in prayer and reflection with a few of their closest friends, others attend events off-campus. The University Park Mall and the Eddy Street Commons host several retail outlets, local restaurants, and a few evening happy hours close to campus. For many, the 57 chapels or Grand Basilica offer a refuge from the busy week of studying and extracurricular activity that almost all University of Notre Dame students undertake. The school can be as exciting or as conservative as you desire. In short, the University of Notre Dame community is incredibly well rounded and offers much for everyone. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Kenny:University of Notre Dames student body (including graduate students) is approximately 12,000 people. Around 8,000 of these students are undergraduates, a size that allows many students to know each other well without imposing on one anothers personal space. I was very pleased with my typical class sizes. I often shared the class with enough students to form study groups, but I also developed a strong personal relationship with many of my professors. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Kenny:My favorite class as a student at University of Notre Dame was Econometrics. Though many students have claimed this to be the most difficult course in the Economics major, I emerged from the class more determined to attend graduate school than ever before. My professor, the department chair, was a very difficult instructor. He was also one of the brightest, most inspiring men I have ever had the opportunity to know. Check out Kennys tutoring profile. What To Know About The ACT

What To Know About The ACT The ACT, (originally an acronym for American College Testing) is a standardized exam that measures what you have learned in your high school courses, and serves as an alternative to the SAT examination for college admissions. All four-year colleges and universities accept ACT results. The ACT covers four subject areas; English, Mathematics,Reading, and Science, along with an optional Writing section. The ACT is not an IQ or aptitude exam; rather, the material directly relates to what you have learned in your high school courses. In other words, the more you challenge yourself in the classroom, the more prepared you will be. The assessment consists of 215 multiple-choice questions and takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes to complete, including a brief break, (or requires just over four hours if you are also taking the Writing Test). The English section consists of 75 questions that measure written English and rhetorical skills, such as sentence structure, punctuation and grammar usage, as well as writing strategies, organization, and style. Students receive 45 minutes to complete the English category. Spelling skills, vocabulary, and rote grammar rules are not tested. Students receive an hour to complete the mathematics section, which has 60 questions from areas such as pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry. You are permitted to use a calculator on this portion of the exam, but make sure that it is ACT-approved! For example, all TI-89 or TI-92 calculators are allowed, but any calculators with a QWERTY keyboard are prohibited. [RELATED:What is an Average ACT Score?] The reading category is designed to gauge reading comprehension. Questions on passages measure your understanding of what a passage is directly stating, as well as your grasp of statements with implied meanings. Reading selections include content from four areas: social studies, natural sciences, prose fiction, and humanities. Students receive 35 minutes to complete this section. The science portion of the ACT consists of 40 questions over a 35-minute period. Scientific information is presented through various formats such as data representation, research summaries, and conflicting viewpoints. Corresponding multiple-choice questions require students to interpret graphs, tables, descriptions of experiments, and related hypotheses or inconsistent views. Content area includes biology, chemistry, physics, and Earth/space sciences. This category emphasizes scientific reasoning skills over recall of scientific facts, reading comprehension, and mathematical ability. Calculators are not permitted during the science portion of the exam. Though the ACT Writing Test is an optional supplement to the exam, more and more colleges are recommending or requiring applicants take it. The writing test gives a single prompt and 30 minutes in which to complete it. You are asked to state your position on an issue, and you may adopt one or the other of the stances described in the prompt (your score will not be affected by your viewpoint). The Writing Test assesses your writing skills emphasized in your high school English classes and in entry-level college composition classes. In order to do well on the ACT, careful preparation is crucial. ?? Help! My Child Didnt Get the A-Level Results they Expected!

?? Help! My Child Didn’t Get the A-Level Results they Expected! Help! My Child Didn’t Get the A-Level Results they Expected! It’s Results Day, and for some it can be memorable for all the wrong reasons. If your child didn’t get the results they expected, then a natural reaction is to go into meltdown and start panicking. The trouble is, panicking is the worst possible thing you can do at this stage. So we’re here to help you keep calm, assess your options, and come away from Results Day unscathed. The next steps you take will vary depending on the results your child received.Try to calm down. Take a deep breath, count to three, and relax. You need to be thinking clearly. If you’re struggling to cope with the stress, consider bringing a friend or family member on board to lend a hand. If they’re less personally involved, they’ll have a clearer perspective, and will be able to better communicate with the relevant people.Always keep in mind that university isn’t the only option. There’s always an alternative. Here’s what you can do if your child didn’t get the A-Level results they expected...Ta lk to your UniversityIf your child only missed out on the grades they needed by a few marks, then it may be worth taking the time to speak to somebody at the university of their choice. In some cases, the university may reconsider their decision and allow your child to attend. Otherwise, they may well offer your child a place on a different course. Whether or not your child wants that place, however, is a different question. If you’re planning on appealing a grade (see ‘Appeal the Grades’ below), then you should make the university aware. They may be able to put your child’s place on hold, or at least defer entry until next year.No matter what circumstances you find yourself in on Results Day, it’s well worth talking to the university about it. You never know what might happen!Appeal the Grades If you or your child believes a paper was marked incorrectly or unfairly, then there is an appeals process you can go through. We advise starting the process as soon as possible, as it can take a while to review your child’s grade. There may be a university place at stake, so it’s important to act quickly. You’ll have to go through your child’s school to appeal a grade. The school will generally have members of staff to talk to when your child receives their results, and they should be able to point you in the right direction. You should also make sure to alert your child’s chosen university. If they’re aware of the appeal, they may reserve your child’s place on the course. However, they’re under no obligation to do so which is why it’s best to check beforehand. Always make sure to get anything in writing, as well. It’s worth bearing in mind that appealing a grade may actually end up making things worse. Grades can be moved downwards as well as upwards. So if you are g oing to appeal a decision, perhaps consider consulting with your child’s teacher. If they expected a better grade too, then you may have a case. If they didn’t, then maybe it’s not worth the risk.Go Through ClearingIf your child doesn’t have the grades they need for their chosen universities, and you aren’t planning on appealing, then your next best option is to go through clearing.Essentially, universities will often have undersubscribed courses. As a result, they will often have lower grade requirements, and be more willing to accept your child. In 2018, over 60,000 kids received a university place through clearing. You can see a list of all the available courses on the UCAS website. These are updated regularly so keep checking back if nothing takes your child’s fancy. You’ll need to apply for clearing in much the same way your child applied to their original choices. Make sure to have details of your child’s GCSE and A-Level grades to hand, as well as access to their personal statement. You’ll then be given a clearing number and invited to the “Track” service. You can then provide the university your child is applying to with that clearing number and a personal ID number. A verbal offer will then be given. You should only accept one clearing offer. You can then apply through UCAS, following the steps that you’ll be given.Bear in mind that if your child does end up studying at a different university, they will need to update their student finance details so that they still receive their loan. You should do this as soon as you know which university they’re attending.Take a Gap Year Gap years are a popular way of taking some time to yourself and developing extra skills before you commit to a university course. If your child doesn’t have the grades they need, and had their heart set on a particular course, then a gap year could be a viable option.A gap year can take any number of forms. Your child could go and spend some time working in another country, or simply go travelling on the other side of the world.Ideally, your child should choose gap year activities that offer something in return. Taking a year to develop their skills, gain work experience, or even just make some money looks far better on the CV than simply having a big holiday. While it’s fine for your child to spend a bit of time relaxing (after all, they’ve had a stressful few months!) they should really look at the various opportunities open to them if they want to make the most of their time.Taking a gap year will also give your child the time they need to decide whether they still want to att end university. If they do, then they can reapply as normal next year.Other OpportunitiesEven though your child might have had their heart set on going to university, it doesn’t mean it’s the only option. There are lots of other opportunities that your child could pursue.Apprenticeships, for example, have been steadily growing in popularity over the last few years. They offer the opportunity for your child to enter the world of work, earn some money, and gain a vocational qualification at the same time. Some apprenticeships even enable your child to work towards a degree while they work. UCAS has a list of available apprenticeships. If your child isn’t interested in any of those, do keep checking back as more opportunities will be added. It’s also possible for your child to simply start working. A lot of jobs don’t require a degree, and some don’t even require A-Levels. If your child was going to uni without any idea of career choices, then they should take the time to thin k about what they might want to do. It might turn out that they can pursue their chosen career without going to university at all. It’s Not the End of the WorldResults Day can be extremely stressful and emotions can run wild. Try not to get carried away and start panicking. Don’t make any rash decisions. It might seem awful now, but it’s not the end of the world. There are always alternatives to university.Try to focus on the positives. No university means no massive student debt to worry about, it means not having to cook your own meals and iron your own clothes. It means your child might just be staying with you for a little while longer. We’ll let you decide whether that’s good or bad!Hopefully this has made you feel a little better about the various options available to your child.Whatever your child decides, we wish them all the best!
